Aczone (dapsone) Gel, 5% is a sulfone drug indicated for the topical treatment of acne vulgaris. Aczone Gel 5% is available in generic form.

Dosage

For topical use only. Not for oral, ophthalmic, or intravaginal use. After the skin is gently washed and patted dry, apply approximately a pea-sized amount of Aczone Gel 5%, in a thin layer to the acne affected areas twice daily. Rub in Aczone Gel 5% gently and completely. Wash hands after application of Aczone Gel 5%.

Storage

Don't keep dapsone (Aczone) in the freezer.

You should keep dapsone (Aczone) at room temperature.

Warnings

Low red blood cell count

  • Risk factors: G6PD deficiency | Congenital or idiopathic methemoglobinemia | Other methemoglobin-inducing agents
  • Dapsone (Aczone) may cause a rare condition called methemoglobinemia, which will result in lowering of your red blood cell count. This condition is more likely if you have glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency in your red blood cells. Seek medical help immediately if you notice your lips, mouth, or nails turning blue or grey.

    Other effects on blood cells

  • Risk factors: G6PD deficiency/oral Dapsone | Antimalarial medications | Bactrim
  • Dapsone (Aczone) may result in lowering of red and white blood cell counts. Use of dapsone (Aczone) should be avoided if you are taking oral Dapsone, antimalarial medications, or the antibiotic, Bactrim.
