Inhibitor of H+-K+-ATP, the dextrorotatory isomer of omeprazole. Reduces the secretion of hydrochloric acid in the stomach by specific inhibition of the proton pump in parietal cells. The therapeutic use includes gastroesophageal reflux disease: erosive reflux esophagitis (treatment), prevention of relapse in patients with healed esophagitis, symptomatic treatment of GERD.

Nexium Product Description

Drug Uses

Nexium is a powerful proton-pump inhibitor (PPT). Nexium acts selectively on the final phase of gastric juice production and minimizes its acidity and volume. Nexium is assigned to patients older than 12 years for:

Treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
Management of duodenal ulcer disease caused by H. Pylori bacterium
Prevention of relapses after esophagitis treatment

To treat and prevent intestinal ulcers associated with NSAID use, as well as for long-term management of Zollinger Ellison syndrome (ZES), Nexium is recommended for adult patients only.

The recommended daily dose of Nexium is administered after assessing the severity of intestinal diseases and it usually ranges from 20 to 40mg per day. The maximum dose of Nexium is 160mg at 24-hour interval. The average duration of Nexium use is 6 weeks.

Missed dose

If over 12 hours passed after a missed dose of Nexium, do not take this proton pump inhibitor and go back to the regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose of Nexium to compensate for the missed one.

More Information

Nexium can be prescribed for children aged 1 to 12 years. For the convenience of dosing in children, they should be prescribed with Nexium oral suspension (2.5 mg, 5mg or 10mg).

Storage

Nexium must be stored in a dry, dark place at controlled room temperature up to 25°C. The container with tablets should be kept tightly closed and in a safe place out of reach of children.

Warnings

If Nexium is used for a long time or if signs of intestinal diseases change in character, adjustment of dosing schedule can be required. The risk of infection by bacteria of the family enterobacteriaceae increases when using Nexium more than 12 months.

Nexium Side Effects

Commonly, Nexium is well tolerated; however, it may cause mild and transient unwanted effects. After the use of Nexium, adult patients may experience dry mouth, headache, flatulence, abdominal pain, dizziness, constipation, diarrhoea or vomiting. In children and adolescents under 17 years old, Nexium may cause somnolence, nausea or tachypnoea.
